GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES STATEWIDE "SPEED WEEK" INITIATIVE TO CRACK DOWN ON SPEEDERS IN NEW YORK

|

On August 11, 2013, New York Governor, Andrew M. Cuomo, announced a week-long New York State Police enforced initiative that will target speeding and aggressive drivers across the state. The "Speed Week" Campaign runs from August 10-17, 2013.

Per the Governor's press release, "speeding is the number one cause of deaths on (New York) roads each year, and it is a dangerous activity that puts everyone at risk." Further, "The goal of this campaign, and enforcement year round, is to reduce speed related crashes and improve safe travel for drivers and passengers on New York's roads. Speeding by all vehicle types, as well as other traffic violations, will be heavily enforced throughout the week in addition to normal year-round enforcement."

The State Police will also be watching for distracted (texting, using cell phone) or impaired (Driving While Intoxicated – DWI, DWAI, DWAI-Drugs, etc…,) drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up and drivers that are violating the "Move over Law."

The press release further states that drivers can expect to see more troopers on major highways during this detail and unmarked patrol vehicles will also be out in full force.

With this in mind, it should be noted that the accumulation of three (3) speeding convictions or eleven (11) points within an eighteen (18) month period, will result in the suspension/revocation of an individual's driver's license (or driving privilege) in the State of New York.

Additionally, upon the accumulation of six (6) or more points (from traffic convictions), New York State DMV will impose a driver responsibility assessment as follows: 6 points = $100.00 per year for three years. Each additional point (in excess of the initial 6) will cost an additional $25.00 per year for three years.

Most importantly, both of these additional penalties apply to all drivers, including those licensed by a state other than New York.
